Family horse attacked and killed by dogs while boarded in unlicensed ranch

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A beloved horse was killed earlier this month while being boarded in Las Vegas.

It’s hard to imagine a thousand pound animal being killed by a couple of dogs.

However, that is what happened to Quincy the horse while she was staying at a ranch near Torrey Pines and Cheyenne.

Quincy’s owner Brie Poindexter reached out to FOX5’s Victoria Saha soon after Quincy was killed.

Poindexter tells FOX5 she and her daughter love horses and Quincy was the perfect fit for them.

“I saw Quincy and I immediately fell in love oh my gosh she is beautiful,” Poindexter said.

After getting Quincy last year, Poindexter needed a place for her to stay so she found a ranch owner on Torrey Pines.

“I asked him could I board a horse here, Im looking to board and he was just like yeah, I’m going to be doing a mustang rescue through BLM I’m going to be doing a program through them,” Poindexter said.

She thought it was safe enough for Quincy, until it wasn’t.

Poindexter tells us, she visited Quincy the morning of December 13th with her daughter, and then went back in the afternoon to feed her.

“I pulled into the back and I was like oh my goodness she is down,” Poindexter explained. “She was gone, she wasn’t breathing, she was in rigor mortis, that takes 2-3 hours her eyes were glazed over, and there was blood everywhere.”

Poindexter believes the dogs on the property attacked and killed Quincy.

“You can literally see dog prints in the sand,” she said.

She said she went to the ranch owner’s door because she saw him that morning, but was told the owner, his wife and the dogs were in Montana.

“In the beginning I never thought this would happen,” Poindexter said.

Clark County Animal Protection services tell FOX5:

“I understand dogs are dogs, but all he had to do was call me and say hey I’m sorry I don’t know what happened and your horse is dead. I would have been mad but have the decency to call me,” Poindexter expressed.

We also went by to get some answers, the person who answered the door told us the owner was still in Montana.

As for the horse rescue that Poindexter thought was in the works, when she first started boarding Quincy, we found the license for the non-profit was revoked a few years ago, and there is no license under the current name of the ranch.

Looking back, Poindexter said she wishes she was not so trusting.

“Definitely making sure they have the permits, for horses to be there, everything that needs to be followed,” she said.

The family did set up a GoFundMe as they seek justice for Quincy.

According to Metro police they also responded and in their reports they said a neighbor told them she saw two dogs bothering Quincy that morning.

This is still an ongoing investigation being lead by Clark County Animal Protection.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
