STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) – Angola Fire Department Chief William Harter says family pets were killed in a house fire early Monday morning in Steuben County.
Chief Harter says the homeowner called 911 saying a fire had sparked in her home in rural York Township just after 3 a.m. on Monday, March 24.
She told crews she and her son, who were sleeping at the time, were able to exit the home safely. Chief Harter says she then told dispatchers she was trying to go back inside to find their family dogs.
When fire crews arrived, they found the home engulfed in flames. Multiple departments were then called in for mutual aid for tankers and manpower, the Angola Fire Department says.
While working to put out the fire, crews say they deemed the pets had died in the blaze. One firefighter was treated at the scene for exhaustion and was later released.
Steuben County REMC officials were also requested to help at the scene as a live power line was downed during the fire, Chief Harter says.
He says the home and its contents were determined to be a total loss, and the American Red Cross was contacted to help the family.
Chief Harter also thanked all of the responding fire departments and assisting agencies for their help, which he says was a “great display of teamwork amongst all”.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
