
GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) – Two family dogs killed a raccoon with rabies in the front yard of their Gastonia home last Wednesday, police announced on Monday.
According to officers, the raccoon tested positive for rabies two days after being impounded, marking the second confirmed rabies case of 2025 in Gaston County.
The incident happened around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at a home along Dumbarton Road near Laurel Lane.
Officers advised the dogs involved had their rabies vaccinations and received a booster shot shortly after the situation.

Enforcement specialists reportedly completed a neighborhood canvass on Friday, Feb. 28 to notify the community and verify rabies vaccinations for family pets in the area.
It was not immediately clear what led up to the dogs killing the raccoon and the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services was notified about the incident.
