Family calls for compensation after son’s death in stray dog attack

Hassanpur (Ludhiana): Having lost their only son in a stray dog attack, the poor family is now hoping for govt compensation, even as they feel their loss is irreparable. Meanwhile, the civil administration has stated that they are preparing the case for compensation.
While talking to TOI, 40-year-old Randhir Singh, father of the deceased 11-year-old, Harsukhpreet Singh, and a farmer, said he is a small farmer and owns four acres of land. Besides, he has three milk-yielding buffaloes. He added that he was working hard to ensure that his son got a good education and had a bright future, even as farming is not very profitable.
“My son, a student of Class V at a local govt school, was good in studies. I wanted him to get a good education and someday become a doctor or an advocate. However, I didn’t know that we would lose him at such a young age. Our loss is irreparable as we lost our beloved son to stray dogs, but as we are not financially well-off, I want the govt to help us. An NGO told us that the govt provides compensation even in cases where a stray dog bites someone, yet our son was killed,” said the father of the deceased.
Randhir Singh said that after the death of his son, his wife Taranjit Kaur (43) and mother Gurjit Kaur (65) are also in a state of shock.
Gurjit Kaur shared with a choking voice that she would ask her grandson whether he would remember her after she dies, little did she know that she would have to see the dead body of her beloved grandchild. She added that her son brought a puppy (Jacky) six months ago, and her grandson was fond of it.
“A day before, Jacky went missing, so my grandson started looking for it and went outside at 8 am on that day (Jan 10). We already knew that a child was mauled to death by stray dogs in the village, so we were apprehensive. My son went outside and was shocked to see my grandson being killed by the dogs in the field,” said the elderly woman with tears in her eyes. We found that stray dogs killed Jacky as well.”
Commenting on the deaths caused by stray dogs, the elderly woman said it is the people who need to be alert as the govt will not be able to tackle the problem.
The father and grandmother of the deceased said Harsukhpreet’s mother is emotionally shattered and has gone to her parents’ place as her father is unwell. They added that they still fear attacks by stray dogs and have maintained a guard.
Meanwhile, Gurcharan Singh, former sarpanch of the village, said the govt should compensate the two families. He added that whereas Randhir Singh lost his only son, Shankar, father of another child Arjun who was mauled to death by dogs, has three sons (including the deceased) and a daughter and is poor. A prominent villager said whatever help they could provide, they gave to the family of Shankar.
Asked whether there is any proposal for compensation to the two families whose children were mauled to death by stray dogs in Hassanpur village recently, Ludhiana deputy commissioner Jitendra Jorwal said the administration was preparing the cases and sending them to the concerned authorities.
Randhir Singh said six to seven dogs that killed his son were a spoiled breed of Pitbull.
