When Paw Squad 559 pulled Hotdog from an overcrowded shelter in California, their hearts immediately broke for her. She had arrived at the shelter full of milk with no puppies in sight, likely having spent her entire life giving birth to litter after litter. Things looked bleak for poor Hotdog — until her rescuers swooped in and saved the day.
“Unfortunately, due to a heart murmur, she wasn’t due to make it out of the shelter,” LaRee Holt of Paw Squad 559 told The Dodo. “Once she joined our organization, we were able to get her the vetting she needed and on track to living a good life.”

Hotdog was placed in a loving foster home and began waiting for her forever family to find her. A year later, she was still waiting.
Her rescuers assumed she kept getting passed over because of her heart medication needs, even though that was such a small part of who she was. To help Hotdog on her journey to getting adopted, the Paw Squad 559 team brought her to an adoption event. Every dog at the event found a family that day — except for Hotdog.
“Our whole team’s heart broke when Hotdog remained, looking out of the playpen with the little bit of hope she held onto,” Holt said.
No one could understand it. Hotdog was such a wonderful dog. Why was she still being overlooked? In their confusion, the rescue posted about Hotdog’s adoption event plight on social media — and her story immediately went viral.
“Since going viral, the applications came pouring in,” Holt said. “Hotdog had her first meet and greet this week with a family who showed up wearing hotdog socks!”

Thanks to her rescue friends, Hotdog is now finally getting the recognition she deserves. A generous donor also saw her story and offered to cover the cost of her medication for a whole year. She’s currently pending adoption and so close to her happy ending — but many of her furry friends at Paw Squad 559 are still waiting.
“Our organization specializes in the underdogs, and many dogs in our organization wait months patiently for someone to see them like we do — for the gems they really are,” Holt said. “When one dog gets adopted, another in need takes its place.”
