EUGENE, Ore. – A man is on probation and is prohibited from owning dogs for the next 15 years after pleading guilty to leaving a pair of dogs in a hot car until one died, Eugene police said.
According to the Eugene Police Department, back on June 23, 2024, police responded to the Navigation Center at 100 River Avenue after a dog was reported to have been found dead in a vehicle at about 5 a.m. Police said they also found an older labrador in the car, and there had been reports that the dogs had been left in the car in hot weather. Police said the owners, Shayla Rose McFarland, 42 and Joshua Makii McFarland, 46, had been staying at the center and had left the dogs in the car. Both were arrested on charges of first- and second-degree animal neglect on January 12, 2025.
Eugene Police Department said on April 15 that Joshua McFarland had been sentenced to two years of bench probation and 10 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of first-degree animal abuse. McFarland will be barred by statute from owning or possessing a dog for 15 years. Eugene police said McFarland also pleaded guilty to a possession of methamphetamine charge, and was sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation with treatment at the direction of his parole officer.
Court records show that the case for Shayla McFarland’s charges is still in progress.
