COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Paws Humane Society animal shelters in Columbus are facing a critical overcrowding crisis, prompting an emergency 30-day closure of general dog intake operations, effective immediately.
The decision was made to prevent the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable dogs due to lack of space, according to shelter officials. The measure is temporary but urgent, aimed at preserving the community’s no-kill commitment.
During the 30-day pause, the shelters will not accept general dog surrenders. However, field officers will continue to respond to high-priority situations, including dogs that pose immediate public safety threats, are found on busy roads, are victims of cruelty, or are experiencing urgent medical distress.
In an effort to reunite pets with their owners before they enter the shelter system, all impound fees are being waived. Officers are also working in the field to scan pets for microchips, knock on doors, and assist with reunification efforts.
Here’s how you can help if you find a stray:
- Visit a vet clinic or fire station to check for a microchip
- Ask around the area where the pet was found
- Post to local lost-and-found groups on Facebook, Nextdoor, PawBoost, and the Ring app
- Try to reunite the pet with its owner without bringing it to the shelter
The shelter is also offering $150 to $200 per dog to approved rescue organizations willing to take animals, and providing supplies to families who need assistance keeping their pets at home.
Community members are encouraged to foster, adopt, volunteer, and share lost pet and adoption posts on social media.
Shelter officials say the plan is subject to change depending on capacity and public response. “With your help, we can navigate this crisis without sacrificing the lives of animals who deserve a chance,” the shelter stated.
