NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – An 81-year-old woman has died following a dog attack in New Orleans, authorities confirmed.
The incident reportedly happened on Thurs., March 20 in the 10200 block of Brookfield Drive.
Officials say the woman suffered multiple dog bites to her torso and limbs. She was taken to the hospital where she later died.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Barbara Stewart and listed her cause of death as “multiple cuts and abrasions.”
New Orleans EMS spokesperson Lexi Paquette said EMS personnel had to wait for the scene to be cleared by police to ensure the dogs were secured before treating Stewart.
“We arrived on scene and had to wait for a code 4 so that the dogs were put up and not going to harm any of our employees… for the duration of transport,” Paquette said.
NOPD said three dogs were involved in the attack. No arrests have been made as of Wednesday.
The Louisiana SPCA is investigating the status and disposition of the dogs.
Stewart’s daughter declined an interview Thursday morning but said a family representative would be in contact.
The NOPD investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities.
