The poor pup could bear-ly believe his eyes!
A dutiful dog harnessed courage beyond his years to fend off a marauding bear that broke into a California home while his owner slept soundly through the caught-on-camera encounter.
The 17-year-old dog named Doodle was in for the fright of his life as he watched the beast break through the screen door.
Doodle’s owner, Zoe Cadman, was asleep while the bear roamed around her Monrovia home for around 20 minutes over the weekend, she said.
Doodle, determined to protect his domain, shuffled over to the broken door as the bear poked its head inside. The ursine invader reached out and clawed at Doodle, whose long life surely flashed before his eyes as he evaded the swipe and barked in retaliation.
Both animals, apparently curious about the other, locked eyes for a moment before almost touching noses. Doodle didn’t appreciate the bear’s investigation and yipped again before scampering away.
Still, the bear continued to wander back and forth through the front door as if it were lost.
Cadman eventually stirred when she noticed a faint light shining from her kitchen. The famished bear somehow opened her refrigerator and briefly rifled through it before eventually leaving the home as if nothing had ever happened — save for the shattered doorway and frazzled pup.
Home security footage showed the massive bear, which appeared to be wearing some type of collar, stalking through the home while it poked around. It wasn’t immediately clear if the bear belonged to someone or was being tracked, but neighbors in the area told NBC 4 Los Angeles that it was a frequent visitor.
“It’s part of living up here. We’re really close to the mountains and they were here first. But luckily, knock on wood, they’ve all been really friendly coming through here,” Austin Hart, who lives in the area, told the outlet.
Man’s best friend will often push themselves to the brink to protect their owners, even at their own expense.
One California woman’s dog named Eva defended her against a mountain lion in Northern California in 2022. Eva, a 2.5-year-old pup, later succumbed to the injuries she sustained during the fight.
Earlier this year, another fearless dog named Duke went toe-to-toe with a pack of coyotes for almost an hour in a Los Angeles neighborhood.
Homeowners living nearby spotted the pooch still wandering around days later and called for him to be brought to a shelter, where he was later adopted after a video of his standoff went viral.
