BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An elderly couple and their two dogs were rescued after a house fire broke out early Wednesday morning in Ridgecrest.
The Ridgecrest Police Department said on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at around 12:32 a.m., officers and firefighters were called to multiple 911 calls reporting a house fire with visible flames and smoke.
When officers arrived, they saw no one outside, suggesting that the residents were likely still inside. With flames intensifying and smoke thickening, the officers made the decision to go inside the home.
Officers found an elderly woman asleep in her bed. Wearing earplugs, she was unaware of the fire spreading around her, according to police. The officers woke her up and took her to safety.
Officers also found an elderly man trying to save his dog amidst the encroaching smoke. The officers helped the man and one of his dogs out of the home.
A second dog was rescued by firefighters when they found it under some debris.
Firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire. The fire was contained before it could spread to other nearby structures, according to police.
