NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A Nacogdoches Animal Shelter employee was recognized this week for throwing himself in front of two large aggressive dogs to shield his co-worker.
On Tuesday, the Nacogdoches City Council presented Zach Smith, an animal services attendant at the shelter, with a plaque and framed proclamation of bravery and recognition for service above and beyond the call of duty.
Earlier this month, Smith and his co-worker were responding to some stray dogs in a city neighborhood when two large and aggressive dogs rushed toward them.
“Zach took quick and thoughtless action to push her out of the way and shielded her with his own body, at great personal cost,” the city of Nacogdoches said. “Smith received numerous cuts, bruises and bites across his arms, legs and face before the attack ceased, but in doing so he protected his coworker from serious physical harm.”
He is currently recovering from his injuries, but he’s already back working with the animals he loves at the shelter.
