ESBON, Kan. (KCTV) – Dozens of dogs were rescued from “unimaginable conditions,” as dozens more were found deceased on a property in rural North-Central Kansas.
The Jewell County, Kansas, Sheriff’s Office tells KCTV5 News that on Wednesday, April 30, law enforcement officials and animal services representatives seized nearly 50 dogs from a home in Esbon. Around 50 dogs were found deceased on the same property about 250 miles west of Kansas City.
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City said it also responded to the situation as teams worked to remove the dogs from “unimaginable conditions.” The dogs remain scared, sick and suffering. Donations have been asked for to fund treatment, transport, food and safety for the survivors.
According to rescuers, the dogs range in age from puppies at 3 weeks old to dogs around 8 years old. They were found in squalor – both in and outside of the home – as they were not bred for sale but left to fend for themselves.
WARNING: Some may find the following photos to be disturbing:
Sydney Mollentine, CEO of the Humane Society of Greater KC, said some of the puppies have bite marks and lacerations. She believes the dogs may have had to fight each other for resources.
Leaders of the metro area shelter said 10 of the rescued dogs have been brought back to Kansas City, while 20 others were taken to the Humane Society in Hutchinson. Those 20 additional dogs are expected to be brought to Kansas City on Friday.
Law enforcement officials noted that the man responsible for the abhorrent conditions was living alone. He has been arrested and charges have been filed. The matter is still an active investigation, as no further information has been provided.
