DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KVOA) – A structure fire on the 3000 block of West Mustang Road outside Douglas has caught the attention of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, which is now investigating the incident as a potential arson case.
Early Wednesday morning, Pirtleville and Sunnyside Fire Departments responded to the blaze, finding both a residence and an attached structure engulfed in flames.
Initial reports suggested the presence of a 55-year-old woman and multiple dogs inside the residence.
While battling the fire, emergency personnel located the woman, who was then evaluated by medics from the Douglas Fire Department. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
“The fire is being investigated as arson,” said a spokesperson. The woman, who appears to be experiencing mental health issues, reportedly told deputies she started the fire to seek help.
The residence housed 15 dogs. Sadly, several perished in the fire, while the remaining were taken to various shelters within the county.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area on Mustang Road as the investigation by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office continues.
