Donnie Yen, who was set to star in a film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs, has confirmed its cancelation. The film was originally announced in March 2017 by Fast and Furious producer Neil Mortiz and Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto joined the project last year. In a new interview, Yen revealed that the film is no longer in the works.
“I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights,” Yen told Polygon.
“I waited for years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing. Well, on to better things.”
Those better things might include a spinoff movie focused on Caine, a primary antagonist of John Wick 4.
Sleeping Dogs was developed by United Front Games and released in 2012, garnered positive reviews, and achieved strong sales. The developer also announced plans for an ambitious sequel and a multiplayer spinoff. However, United Front Games announced its closure in 2016, closing the door on the franchise.
The open-world action game is set in Hong Kong and follows Wei Shen, an undercover Chinese-American police officer infiltrating a Triad organization.
Sleeping Dogs is available on PC, macOS, PS4, and Xbox One.
