SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Staff from The Cat Depot Adoption Center in Sarasota said Sunday even before they opened for business, they’d received large amounts of donations dog food, bedding and toys to help with the 18 dogs recently brought to the non-profit by humane agents.
The animals were transported to the Sarasota facility after they said an elderly woman from Hamilton County, Florida called humane agents to ask for help.
“She’s an elderly woman, had fallen gravely ill actually prior to Hurricane Debby, and was living on her property out of her vehicle and realized that she needed assistance after the storm,” said Claudia Harden with Cat Depot.
Harden added while her facility may be equipped to handle dozens of cats and kittens, the sudden influx of canines is a new challenge.
The staff said while the dogs appeared to be fed, most were infested with fleas and ticks, and one had a broken hind leg according to staff members. Because of that, most of the bedding must be destroyed and replaced to slow the spread.
Donations of dog food, bedding and supplies can be dropped off at Cat Depot located at 2542 17th Street, Sarasota during regular business hours.
Cat Depot staff said state humane agents remain at the woman’s property as they try to round up additional dogs that’ll then be brought to Sarasota for treatment before hopefully being ready for adoption.
