Dogs returned to owner after attacking teen in Hayfork, mother upset

The dogs that attacked a 13-year-old girl in Hayforkon Sept. 19 have been returned to their owner after a 10-day quarantine and the young teen’s mom is not happy about it.

Thirteen-year-old Stormy Ashby was walking in downtown Hayfork last month when she noticed a group of dogs surrounding her. Things quickly went south when she continued to walk and said the dogs began to bite and attack her leg.

Ashby was on the ground crying for help when a nearby community member called 9-1-1 and contacted the girl’s mother, Shawnee Westman.

Westman said the dogs are owned but not licensed or vaccinated.

“Well, aside from the medical treatment and her not wanting to walk by herself anymore, we were relieved when they picked up the dog. Now that they’ve released the dogs, it’s terrifying that this could happen to someone else,” Westman said.

In an update earlier this week, the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office said Animal Control was able to locate the dog matching Stormy’s description, but since she was unable to confirm that the dog was the same dog from the attack, they placed all of the owner’s dogs into quarantine as a precautionary measure.

The dogs completed their quarantine but, according to the TSCO, they legally had to give the owner an opportunity to redeem the dogs by paying a fee, which the owner did.

“[The SCDA] said that [the owner] had an open case already from last year when the dogs attacked someone else. They said that she had failed to appear to that court date and had a warrant out for her arrest. So, I was like, ‘Why wasn’t she arrested when she went to pick her dogs up if she has a warrant?’ And they couldn’t give me an answer for that,” said Westman.

In the same post TSCO said a previously submitted matter about these dogs was declined by the Trinity County’s District Attorney’s Office but they are re-submitting the matter for court proceedings.

We reached out to TSCO and the DA’s office but have yet to hear back from them.
