FRESNO, Calif. – The Diamond ‘Dogs are back in action for the 2025 season. Fresno State opened the campaign with a dominant 7-1 win over the BYU Cougars at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium, giving them a 1-0 record, on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State took control early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Justin Stransky reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a wild pitch, while Bobby Blandford and Cayden Munster added RBI singles to capitalize on BYU’s defensive missteps.
In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-0. Lee Treviño was hit by a pitch, advanced on a passed ball, and eventually scored on another wild pitch. BYU managed only scattered hits but could not bring runners home.
The Cougars struggled to get past Fresno State pitcher Jack Anker, who dominated with ten strikeouts over six innings.
BYU broke their scoreless drought with an RBI double to make it 4-1. The Diamond ‘Dogs responded immediately in the bottom of the inning with a three-run rally. Saldivar was hit by a pitch and scored on Murf Gray’s RBI single. Blandford followed with a double that brought Gray home, and another run scored on a bases-loaded walk to Treviño, giving the Bulldogs a commanding 7-1 lead.
In the final two innings, Fresno State’s bullpen, led by Cooper Bergman and Caleb Anderson, shut down BYU’s offense, allowing only one hit while striking out four. The Cougars’ last-ditch efforts in the ninth inning were thwarted, as Anderson recorded the final outs to secure the win.
