HOUSTON (KTRK) – Police in Houston say a 2-year-old girl is dead after she was mauled by several dogs in what relatives are calling a tragic accident.
The fatal mauling happened about 12:20 p.m. Monday in a Houston home. Police say a babysitter was watching over the 2-year-old girl when three Rottweilers attacked her. The toddler was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A relative says the girl was being watched by an 18-year-old cousin at the time of the attack. He says the toddler spent a lot of time in the house.
Cedric Smith, another cousin, stopped by the home Tuesday afternoon to pay his respects.
“I just want to give my condolences to the family. I don’t know what it’s like to lose a child, but I understand that it’s going to be a hard thing to get through for a 2-year-old,” he said.
Smith says the family has long had dogs, and he characterizes the mauling as a tragic accident.
“They normally have the dogs locked up or whatnot,” he said.
A man who works in the neighborhood says he saw the Rottweilers often but was shocked to learn the dogs attacked a child.
“I see them all the time when I cut the grass. They bark at me and stuff… I’ve never seen them do anything bad, those dogs, and the people, I’ve never had any problems with them,” he said.
Police are investigating the incident.
The City of Houston Animal Control says the dogs were turned over to them and then put down.
