PORTLAND, CT (WFSB) – Two pets were killed and a home was gutted by a fire in Portland on Monday afternoon.
The Portland Fire Department said it responded to Meshomasic Trail for a report of a wood pile burning on the side of the house which then spread to the house itself.
Firefighters said the fire started in the back of the home and rapidly moved through the home. They said it was well-involved by the time they arrived around 1:30 p.m.
They noted that there was no city water due to the neighborhood being rural. As a result, tankers were needed.
Firefighters remained on the scene well into the evening hours to put out hotspots.
They said they wrapped up around 7 p.m.
“We could not have done this without all the help from our mutual aid partners,” the Portland Fire Department said in a social media post. “While the home was a total loss and this is a very devastating fire for our community, we are grateful that no one was hurt in the fire.”
The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
The fire department said the family lost everything, including a couple of dogs.
The fire department posted a GoFundMe fundraising page to help the family out. It can be found here.
