Dogs in fatal Pickaway County mauling tested positive for cocaine

The two dogs at the center of the fatal mauling of Ashville, Ohio woman Jo Ann Echelbarger were found to have trace amounts of cocaine in their systems, according to forensic veterinary autopsy documents obtained by 614Now.

The dogs were shot and killed by police after they attacked Echelbarger on October 17 of last year, and their owners, Susan Withers and her son Adam Withers, were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter earlier this week by a Pickaway County jury.

An autopsy of both dogs was performed in November by the Ohio State University’s Veterinary Medical Center (with the toxicological portion of the exam performed the University of California Davis Veterinary Medical Center on Nov. 19.). The examinations found that both dogs had trace amounts of cocaine in their livers.

“Note the detection of trace concentrations of the cocaine metabolite, norcocaine in the tested samples,” the report reads. “A trace amount indicates that the analyte was present in the tested sample but at a concentration below the stated reporting limit. We cannot accurately quantitate trace amounts. This confirms exposure to cocaine in this case.”

It’s currently unclear how the dogs were exposed to cocaine.

Susan and Adam Withers are currently awaiting sentencing.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
