NORTH HAVEN, CT — Several animals, including two dogs in cardiac arrest, were rescued after a fire at an animal hospital in North Haven on Sunday night, according to officials.
Firefighters responded around 9:15 p.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting a dryer fire at the Central Animal Hospital at 4 Devine St. in North Haven. The calls also reported that the building was filling with smoke, according to officials.
“Unfortunately the area of the fire was in the same area where numerous animals were being housed,” officials wrote in a post on the North Haven Fire Department’s Facebook page. “Firefighters extinguished the fire and worked aggressively to ventilate the building of smoke and toxic fumes. Firefighters were able to carry some of the animals outside where hospital staff and several firefighters worked tirelessly to revive and care for a number of dogs. Initially 2 dogs were in cardiac arrest but through the efforts of hospital staff and firefighters both dogs were saved.
“Multiple agencies responded to provide assistance considering the number of animals involved including North Haven PD, Nelson Ambulance and North Haven Animal Control officers.”
Officials said the incident remains under investigation, and some fire units remained at the scene late Sunday night.
