GASTONIA, N.C. — A raccoon killed by family dogs in Gastonia has tested positive for rabies, marking the second confirmed case in Gaston County this year.
Two dogs killed a raccoon in their yard on Dumbarton Road on Wednesday morning, health officials said. Animal care workers collected the raccoon’s body and sent it to a state lab in Raleigh for testing. Results came back Friday confirming the raccoon had rabies.
Both dogs were up-to-date on their rabies shots and received extra booster shots after encountering the raccoon. No humans came into contact with the infected raccoon.
Officials went door-to-door in the Dumbarton Road area on Friday to warn neighbors and check if their pets had current rabies vaccinations.
Gaston County Police are reminding everyone how important it is to keep pet vaccinations current – it protects not just your pets, but also your family and community.
The county health department has also been notified about this latest rabies case.
