Dogs drive donations in Folsom ‘battle of the badges’ blood collection event

A friendly competition in Folsom on Wednesday aimed to fill a critical need.The city of Folsom’s fire and police departments joined forces for a blood drive, and they did it in a way they hope will capture a lot of attention.The departments enlisted the star power of their respective department dogs to encourage people to sign up to donate blood.“When the fire department asked us to participate and have a little rivalry back and forth and see which dog comes out on top, we jumped at the opportunity,” said Commander Andrew Bates with the Folsom Police Department. “We thought this was a great idea.”“Liberty,” the police department’s dog and “Blitz,” the fire department’s dog, welcomed blood donors to the blood drive that was hosted by the agencies and Vitalant, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit blood and biotherapies health care organizations.When people showed up at the police department to donate blood, they were asked by blood donation drive organizers which “team” they wanted to receive credit for their donation: Team Blitz (Folsom Fire) or Team Liberty (Folsom PD).“They’re always excited to see police and fire, but realistically, they’re excited to see the dogs,” said Brian Beck, the Folsom Fire Department’s assistant chief of EMS. “Hopefully the dogs help draw more people in and they understand we’re doing this for the community and everybody in Sacramento County.”KCRA 3 spoke with both departments which said they’re pleased that this friendly competition will ultimately help to meet an important need and that is for people to step up and donate blood.“It brings happiness to something we’re trying to shed light on… sometimes a very negative situation where people need blood, ” Beck said. “When you get to come and have an experience when you’re around dogs, and people who have a positive attitude, it always makes everything better. So we’re hoping that experience happens.”The top dog in this competition will be announced after the blood drive is over. Organizers noted that everyone wins when blood donations are made.“It’s all for a good cause and we’re gonna celebrate the winner no matter who comes out on top,” Bates said.For information about where to donate blood in your community, visit www.vitalant.org.
