LOS ANGELES – The Fresno State baseball team opened the 2025 Los Angeles Regional against top-seed UCLA on Friday afternoon.
The Diamond ‘Dogs fell 19-4 to the Bruins in their 2025 NCAA postseason debut, dropping their overall season record to 31-28.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bruins took an early lead over the Bulldogs with a big, four-run first inning.
Griffen Sotomayor earned his 41st RBI of the year in the top of the third inning, putting the Bulldogs on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored Cam Schneider.
UCLA extended its cushion in the bottom of the frame after a solo home run and an RBI single to make it a 6-1 game.
The Bulldogs continued to chip away at the Bruin lead in the fourth inning. Bobby Blandford stretched a base hit into a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Justin Stransky sent him home with an RBI groundout.
The Bruins’ offense was silenced for three innings before the ‘Dogs allowed UCLA to score six runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh.
Eddie Saldivar and Blandford tacked on a couple of runs in the top of the eighth by each hitting solo shots to make it a 12-4 game.
The Bruins sealed their fate by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the eighth, including a pair of home runs and two RBI singles.
NOTES
- Only one Bulldog better struck out against the Bruins.
- Fresno State is now 0-3 against UCLA in the NCAA postseason.
- Overall, the Bulldogs are 60-72 in NCAA regional games, and 0-3 when it is hosted in Los Angeles.
