NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team suffered its fifth straight loss on Thursday in a 6-1 defeat to No. 16 Mississippi State.
Freshman Pablo Martinez Gomez and sophomore Danil Panarin generated a 6-3 win over No. 29 Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano to begin the match. Mississippi State struck back soon after at No. 3 doubles. No. 28-ranked junior Nathan Cox and senior Michael Ross led at nearly every facet of the match against No. 4 Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez, including 5-4 and 6-5 advantages. The top pairing was unable to put away their Bulldog opponents, though, falling 7-6 (2) to give Mississippi State the doubles point.
The Bulldogs extended the momentum into singles play, taking first set leads at each position. Panarin evened the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-1 second set en route to a comeback 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 88 Jovanovic. The sophomore now owns a team-high three ranked singles wins. Panarin’s result was Vandy’s lone singles victory of the day.
