PHOENIX (AZFamily) —The California wildfires continue to ravage the Los Angeles area, destroying thousands of homes and leaving many people and pets displaced.
On Saturday, 21 dogs were flown to Phoenix to be put up for adoption at the Arizona Humane Society as a way to provide more kennel space in the California animal shelters.
“This is actually really important to be able to create life-saving kennel space in the L.A. shelters, so then that way owned pets and pets that are evacuating from the fires have a place to go before they’re being reunited,” said Kelsey Dickerson, a spokesperson with the Arizona Humane Society.
The pets on board the plane were homeless and in the L.A. County area. They don’t have any owners, but that may soon change as they look for their “furever” home in the Valley.
“We have a wide range. Everything from puppies to adult dogs. It’s going to be a very fluffy and adorable crew,” said Dickerson.
The dogs landed at the Phoenix Deer Valley Airport, where they were welcomed, unloaded, and taken to AHS’ Sonnyslope campus. The flight was in partnership with Wings of Rescue and Petco Love.
After all the dogs were brought to the humane society, the staff medically evaluated them. Many dogs will soon be ready to be adopted and start their new life in the Valley.
“We’re just thankful for everyone who has made this possible,” said Dickerson.
