The Auburn Police Department arrested two dog owners on charges related to animal cruelty on April 2.
The Police Department said it charged Laura L. Hendrickson and Kenneth D. Sulger. They are facing a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals. They are also facing misdemeanor charges of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, abandonment of animals and failing to provide proper food and drink to animals.
On March 19, officers were dispatched to a residence on North Division Street for an animal abuse complaint at a condemned residence. The report said two dogs, named Stella and Paula, were living in deplorable conditions. Stella is a 2-year-old Pitbull mix. Paul is an 8-year-old Chihuahua mix.
Police said the dogs were living in crates in the condemned home. The two were abandoned for 10 days and did not receive adequate food.
Stella’s crate was too small for a dog her size. She lived in that crate for most of her life. Police said Hendrickson and Sulger deprived her of food since at least November 2024.
Police described Stella’s paws as swollen and infected, with no padding on them. She lost hair and was severely underweight and malnourished. She could not take more than two steps on her own when she was taken out of the crate. She will now need to wear boots on her paws for the rest of her life, police said.
Police did not describe the condition of Paula.
Hendrickson and Sulger were processed at the Auburn Police Department and released on appearance tickets.
