Anchorage residents are heeding warnings from experts amid reports that the volcanic Mont Spurr is showing signs of an impending eruption.
Despite the focal point of volcanic activity being roughly 80 miles west of Anchorage, an explosive event could produce ash clouds that reach Alaska’s biggest population center, according to seismology experts.
City residents have been snapping up protective gear such as KN95 masks, window-sealing tape and vehicle air filters.

The local Anchorage government warned about the potential risk of ash inhalation to humans and particularly small children and those already suffering from respiratory problems.
The government also made a special mention of the damage ash cloud particles could have on animals with a call for owners to ensure pets’ safety.
This has prompted for a surge in demand in accessories such as Rex Specs, a brand of high-performance dog eyewear similar to ski goggles which are now deemed as a ‘necessity’ by animal experts in the region.
Demand for respiratory masks for dogs too has also soared amid concerns that the ash could contain “tiny jagged particles of rock and natural glass” according to the United States Geological Survey.
