GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – The dog who survived after being abandoned at a Vienna Township home last month has a new home.
The Genesee County Animal Control says Baxter was adopted on Thursday. His new owner drove three hours one way to rescue him.
In a Facebook post, Baxter’s new owner was drawn to him by his “adorable” face and “sweet” eyes, but his story is what sealed the deal for her.
On Jan. 19, deputies with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Langdon Drive in Vienna Township for a report of two dogs abandoned by the previous homeowner.
Two dogs were locked in cages inside the garage, had no food or water and were covered in feces and urine. Police say that both dogs were really weak.
Both Baxter and the other dog were taken to the vet. However, one of the dogs had to be euthanized.
Police later arrested Jeremy Justin Neph, and he was charged with one count of killing and torturing an animal.

According to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Neph said that his job at FedEx required him to work long hours, and he was unable to care for the dogs.
Neph was given a $10,000 cash surety bond. He is currently out on bond.
He is scheduled to be back in court on Feb. 12 for a preliminary exam.
