East Syracuse, N.Y. — A dog was treated for smoke exposure after a bad kitchen fire broke out in an East Syracuse home Friday.
Around 5:01 p.m., firefighters were called to 118 W. Ellis St. for a house fire in a kitchen in a back apartment, said Robert Russell, East Syracuse assistant fire chief.
There were four fire trucks and three ambulances on the street. Police had Ellis Street closed from Silver Street to North Center Street. The house is around the corner from the Silver Street Event Center.
The fire was mostly contained to the back apartment, but smoke spread throughout the house, Russell said.
One person was in the house when the fire started but was out before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters rescued a cat and a dog from the house, he said.
The cat was fine, and the dog was being treated by the EAVES Ambulance staff for smoke exposure.
The emergency workers said the dog, which took in a lot of smoke, was breathing better and they were monitoring him in the ambulance.
The fire was put out in about 10 minutes, and no firefighters or residents were injured, Russell said.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time, he said.
Three American Red Cross volunteers arrived at the house around 6:07 p.m. to help residents.
The property is a two-story, three-family home, according to county records.
