SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) – A dog abandoned two months ago in the South Windsor woods is still up for adoption.
Obie was dumped in the woods back in April and was found tied to a tree by his collar. He was rescued by officers and has been up for adoption at the Tyler Regional Animal Shelter for about 60 days.
“We’ve reposted him, we have 10 or 15 people interested, but when we call them back, we’re realizing that a lot of people are more interested in the story of him versus really reading his requirements and seeing what he needs,” said Kaley Curtis, a community service officer with South Windsor Police.
Curtis said Obie doesn’t show any signs of aggression, is good with women, children and other dogs, but is a little nervous around men.
“We’re looking for somebody who is willing to put in the effort and not give up on him,” she said.
She added that adoptions drop during the summer when families are on vacation. Staff do what they can to keep the dogs active and occupied, especially during extreme heat when exercise outside is limited. Long walks when it’s cooler out and plenty of water are key, but Curtis said some dogs, like Obie, have been in the kennel for months and are getting anxious.
“It’s an influx of abandoned dugs that have been dumped, quarantine dogs that we have in here right now,” she said. “We’re just at capacity so dogs start going stir crazy, the noise of them barking and howling. It really amps up that anxiety and stress.”
The Tyler Regional Animal Shelter is by appointment only. If you’re interested in Obie or the other animals, call South Windsor Police Department Animal Control at 860-648-6239.
