Dog thinking engagement ring is for him delights internet: “If you insist”

A viral video of a man showing his dog the ring he planned to propose with has delighted internet viewers, as they lauded the dog for assuming it was for him.

The hilarious clip was shared on TikTok by user @ecandrews, showing the moment when her fiance revealed the all-important engagement ring to their dog, Murphy. He let the pup get a good look at it and told him, “it’s mom’s.” However, Murphy had another thing in mind.

After seeing the ring, Murphy didn’t waste a moment before lifting his paw into the air and suggesting it be placed on his paw. He evidently thought he would wear it better than his owner would anyway.

Since the clip of Murphy was posted online on December 27, it has gone viral in just a matter of days. At the time of writing, it has amassed more than 3.7 million views and over 926,000 likes on TikTok. Newsweek contacted @ecandrews via TikTok for comment. Alongside the sweet video, the caption reads: “Murphy is so good at keeping a secret.”

It is no secret that pets play an important role in their owner’s lives, so it may come as no surprise when they are involved in such major milestones. Wedding website The Knot collected data from over 7,800 American couples to find the latest trends for popping the question.

Some long-standing traditions remain the same, as 85 percent of people got down on one knee for the proposal, and 69 percent asked for parental permission. But there are others who opt for more-nuanced ideas, as 5 percent included their pet in the proposal.

Asking permission from the bride’s parents might be a well-established convention, but perhaps asking for the dog’s permission is the next best thing. After all, Murphy didn’t say no when he was shown the ring.

After the clip of Murphy’s reaction went viral, many TikTok users were desperate to find out how the proposal went down and whether the pup got to play a role. His owner didn’t disappoint, as she followed up with another video showing how integral Murphy was during the proposal in the park. The pictures show him playing around in the grass and taking center stage in the engagement photos afterward.

The ring wasn’t for Murphy in the end, but he seems pretty happy about his parents’ new chapter.

The adorable video of Murphy wanting to try on the engagement ring has gained more than 1,000 comments at the time of writing, as many social-media users lauded his reaction.

One comment reads: “he’s like, I wasn’t expecting this but sure.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “Oh great heaven I mean if you insist, yes I will.”

“He said, here dad you need to practice,” reads another comment.

One person posted: “I hope mom doesn’t mind being the flower girl.”
