The family dog that attacked and critically injured a 4-month-old baby at a Bridge City home Sunday afternoon was euthanized Monday morning, according to Jefferson Parish officials.
No new information was available about the condition of the infant who was hospitalized with a skull fracture and “severe lacerations” that the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office called life-threatening.
The attack was reported about 12:40 p.m. at a residence in the 200 block of 10th Street in Bridge City, said Capt. Jason Rivarde, spokesperson for the department.
The family had just arrived home with the infant, who was in a baby carrier, Rivarde said. A relative placed the carrier on the floor, and the dog, a female 2-year-old American bully breed, immediately attacked. Another relative stopped the attack and removed the dog from the residence.
The dog was seized by human officers with Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Service (JPAWS). Its owners signed a form requesting that the dog be euthanized due to aggression, parish officials said. JPAWS officials will also have rabies testing performed.
The parish did not have any previous reports of bites or aggression regarding the dog, officials said.
The dog is considered an “exotic bully,” a breed of dog that is not typically known for aggression, according to JPAWS officials. American bullies are stocky, muscular mixed breeds with genetic pools that can consist of American Pit Bull Terriers, American Bull Dog, French Bull Dog or an English Bull Dog, according to the United Kennel Club.
