A six-year-old Labrador mix is still waiting for a forever home, after being surrendered to a shelter by her owner.
Korra has spent the last five months, more than 152 days, in the care of Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter in New Jersey, where she has been struggling with shelter life.
Korra is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all her vaccinations, but still hasn’t managed to find the right home.
“[She] knows commands, affectionate, walks well on leash. Must be the only pet in the home. Older children are ok, or calm, adults only home. She’s a very pretty dog and very sweet,” Kathy Ruskin from Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter told Newsweek.

Though Korra is affectionate and enjoys human companionship, she finds shelter life difficult. She longs for a stable home where she can settle in and feel secure.
“[She] is a total sweetheart who absolutely adores people and can never get enough snuggles. She’s a little shy and nervous when meeting people, especially here at the shelter. That’s not normal, but she recovers very quickly. Korra loves going for her daily walks, playing with balls, and hanging out with her volunteer friends,” the shelter said.
In the first half of 2024, 3.12 million animals entered U.S. shelters, according to Shelter Animals Count, a decrease from the same period in 2023. Despite this, the number of animals in shelters remains high—in the first half of 2024, 322,000 more pets entered shelters than exited them.
There are 14,429 animal shelters and rescue organizations in the U.S. as of 2024, and many are struggling with overcrowding, operating at or above capacity, with some resorting to housing animals in temporary crates in hallways and offices.
The Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter hopes to find Korra the perfect home soon. The organization, which works closely with the Manahawkin shelter operated under the Ocean County Board of Health, is dedicated to finding loving, permanent homes for shelter animals.
Ocean County has two shelters—one in Jackson and one in Manahawkin. Korra is currently waiting at the southern shelter in Manahawkin.
“Our hope for all our shelter dogs is that they are adopted into loving, caring forever homes,” Ruskin said.
