Dog stuns the internet when it’s spotted on top of an Egyptian pyramid. Here’s what happened next

The crowds gathered at the Pyramids of Giza are always in for an awe-inspiring view. Recently though, one visitor was left stunned when he spotted a dog at the top of one of the ancient monuments.

An aerial video shared on Instagram Oct. 14, taken by Marshall Mosher as he was paramotoring around the area, showed the dog prowling around the top of the Pyramid of Khafre — the second largest pyramid in Egypt. The post, which amassed more than 960K likes in seven days, showed the dog roaming over the rough-cut limestone blocks that form the 448-foot ancient structure.

“A dog climbed all the way up the Great Pyramid of Giza! Do you think he lives up there?” Mosher wrote in his caption.

“It’s his now, he peed on it,” one user joked.

“I wonder how long it took him,” another replied. “I want him to come down and get some water.”

“Please tell us if you know he got down safely,” another replied.

Mosher — a professional adventure sports athlete — has traveled to Cairo a number of times to participate in an annual paramotoring event hosted by Sky One, a local company that organizes flights over the pyramids.

“I looked down and saw something running. I assumed it was a dog, though one pilot thought it was a mountain lion,” Mosher says to TODAY.com in an interview.

Due to safety rules that require paramotorists to keep a 328-foot distance from the top of the pyramids, Mosher and his team captured footage of the animal from afar.

“We weren’t sure what it was until reviewing the footage,” he adds.

The sight left Mosher and his team both awestruck and concerned.

“We discussed it afterward and tried flying over the next morning to see if it was still there. It wasn’t,” he says, but later, Mosher was sent a video of what appeared to be the same dog running down the pyramid.

In the comments section of Mosher’s viral post, Animal Protection Foundation — a nonprofit organization in Cairo that works to rescue and help dogs in the area — confirmed that the dog was able to get down safely. The organization has not yet responded to TODAY.com’s request for comment.

Mosher notes that it is not uncommon to see stray dogs wandering near or around the pyramids, adding that he did one see a dog climbing the side of a pyramid once.

“It didn’t go very high, but I’ve definitely never seen a dog on top of the pyramid,” he said.

Though the dog may have safely descended, Mosher says he continues to be concerned about the broader issue of street dogs in the tourist areas of Cairo.

“There are a lot more dogs than there is food and water,” he said. “Some of them look okay, but others don’t… They face many dangers, like getting hit by cars or being mistreated, but they’re all sweet and loving dogs that need homes.”

Now Mosher, who has wanted to adopt a dog for some time, says he’s considering that a dog on top of one of the Seven Wonders of the World might just be a sign.

“I’ve wanted a dog for a while,” he said. “I think the universe is telling me I need an adventurous dog.”
