SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper was attacked by a dog which led to the officer shooting the dog to stop the attack, says Sumter County deputies.
Deputies say on Sunday morning, June 23, a Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to an incident in Wedgefield involving a SC Highway Patrol Trooper and a pit bull.
Upon the deputy’s arrival, the family who owned the dog and the trooper at the scene were interviewed to gather information for the investigation.
The investigation revealed that around eleven o’clock Sunday morning, a state trooper arrived at a Wedgefield home to deliver paperwork.
Sumter County investigators say witness testimony and video from the trooper’s body-worn camera revealed that as the trooper slowly approached the home, dogs began barking.
At that time, the trooper turned to walk back to the patrol vehicle and looked back just in time to see a pit bull come from underneath the home and charge.
The trooper yelled, “Get back!” and shot the dog to defend himself from the attack, says SCSO.
Following an investigation by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office it has been determined that the trooper’s actions were justifiable as evidence showed that the trooper was in fear for his life.
