CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. (WCBS) – A little dog is recovering after falling down a steep cliff in Cliffside Park, New Jersey.
“Yeah, his dog went up here and lept right off the side of the cliff. And as you see, it’s not a small cliff,” one witness, Miles Vosper, said.
Witnesses say the small dog, a shih tzu, fell about 40 feet down this jagged, rocky cliff at the end of Knox Avenue.
“I wasn’t optimistic. I was hoping,” Vosper said. “I know those little dogs can be tanks. So, I was hoping he’d be all right.”
Vosper and Greg Percoco were surveying a nearby property.
“The guys rappelled down from right around by this pipe right here,” Percoco said.
The two witnessed the daunting rescue efforts by first responders.
WCBS had a news helicopter over the scene as rescuers made their way down the face of the cliff.
“These dudes were just scaling the cliff. It was wild,” Vosper said.
After about an hour, one of them emerged with the small black dog in his arms and took it up for an emotional reunion with its owner.
“I came over and I was like, ‘You all right dude?’ Like, I know you’re probably going through it,” Vosper said. “He was just, he was in shock. He broke down a little bit. I was just so happy the dog was all right. You know?”
Remarkably, officials said the dog is stable and suffered only minor cuts and scrapes.
“I’m so happy. Because the owner was so upset. I looked at him and he was just crying,” another witness, Maria Maldonado said. “He just couldn’t believe what happened. So I felt very upset for him, but the dog looked like he was good.”
A police car was waiting to take the pup to get checked out by a vet.
