Dog only barks when something’s wrong, hysterics over what owner finds

It’s rarely a good sign when a dog starts whining, but one malamute’s unexpected reason for getting his owner’s attention has left social media in hysterics.

TikTok user Trinity Watkins (@nene_alea) shared a hilarious clip online showing the moment she woke up from a nap because of her malamute, named Naji, barking and whimpering downstairs. At the time, she wasn’t sure what was happening as Naji isn’t often vocal and “only makes noise when something’s wrong.”

As the malamute was standing by the front door, Trinity told Newsweek that she wondered if “he was asking to be let outside to go to the restroom.” However, it was only when she peered out the glass in door frame that she realized the real reason for his nervousness.

It wasn’t that her malamute wanted to go outside, but rather, her other dog Onyx had escaped and needed to be let back in.

“When it turned out to just be Onyx outside, I was just in shock that this moment happened in real life and he was just waiting outside like he forgot his house key,” Watkins, of Columbus, Georgia, said.

Layered over the video clip, Watkins joked that it turns out her dog is “just a snitch” on his brother instead.

She continued: “I normally talk to my dogs just for giggles, and I know they can understand some things, but never did I think one of them would snitch on the other.”

Once Watkins opened the door, Onyx came trotting inside as though nothing had happened.

Internet users can’t get enough of mischievous pups acting in tandem, and the TikTok video has amassed over 264,100 views and more than 50,800 likes at the time of writing.

In the caption alongside the hilarious video, Watkins also explained that her back yard is in fact fenced, but Onyx found a dip and “managed to dig under it” to get out. Fortunately, Naji was on hand to alert her before he got too far.

Digging can be a common occurrence among dogs who are bored, in need of playtime, hoarding, searching for somewhere cool, or trying to escape. The website PetMD explains that it’s highly reinforcing for most dogs, so they won’t choose to stop doing it by themselves.

That’s where owners should step in if they want to prevent further holes from being dug outside.

PetMD suggests increasing the dog’s mental and physical exercise to tire them out, giving them more stimulating activities to prevent boredom, or even making a specific dig pit where they can bury to their heart’s content.

If, like Onyx, they manage to dig beneath the fence, it’s a good idea to fortify that by with a boulder wall or cement foundation. Indeed, it’s also wise to consider why they’re looking to escape the yard too—is something scaring them, are they outside for too long, or perhaps they think the world beyond the fence is more exciting than within.

Since the TikTok video of Onyx went viral online, it has generated over 120 comments from social media users lauding his antics. Many have even joked about the malamute snitching on him, which is very reminiscent of human siblings.

“After sharing the video, the majority of people were amused by how vocal Naji is and claimed they could hear him trying to say Onyx,” Watkins told Newsweek.

She continued: “Naji isn’t usually a snitch because he absolutely does not like Onyx, which is why we put them outside at different times. Naji usually tries to avoid Onyx because he’s an older dog, whereas Onyx is very young, cuddly. and playful.”

One comment on the post reads: “Onyx just needed some fresh air to clear his mind.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “it’s like those kids that snitch on their siblings for sneaking out the house to party.”

Another person added: “Onyx just standing there like, ‘I called for help twice’.”

While one commenter joked: “I feel like he set Onyx up lmao.”
