LOS ANGELES (KCAL/KCBS) – A California woman claims her dog died after a 55-pound package that a UPS driver tossed over the front gate landed on her.
Naria Harutjunjan says the incident happened just after 5 p.m. Wednesday at her home in the North Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. Security camera video from her next-door neighbor shows the UPS driver approach the home with the package then throw it over the gate.
Harutjunjan says the 55-pound package landed on her small dog, Lulu.
“I took the package, and I saw my dog. She couldn’t move anymore,” she said.
Seemingly moments after the incident, the driver can be seen on Harutjunjan’s Ring camera squatting and looking toward the front gate in the direction of the package. Soon after, he drives away.
“My neighbors were there,” Harutjunjan said. “They helped me with the dog. I brought her to the Mission Hills clinic, but they said she passed away.”
Harutjunjan says initially, Lulu and her other dog, Cookie, were let out to play and started noticing something outside the gate. She took Cookie inside, but by the time she went back out to grab Lulu, the incident had already happened.
“He could kill me,” Harutjunjan said. “He could kill any baby playing here or anybody else.”
She is now left mourning Lulu, whom she rescued about a year ago. She says the dog brought her a smile every day.
“Before I went to let her out, I took her, and I said, ‘I don’t know, Lulu, why I love you so much.’ That was the last time,’” she said.
Harutjunjan says the UPS driver didn’t ring the bell before dropping off the package. She has contacted both UPS and Amazon, from whom she ordered the package, about the incident.
UPS expressed its concern about the situation through a statement:
“We recently learned of the situation in North Hills. We are certainly concerned and will contact the customer. We will investigate and take appropriate action.”
Meanwhile, Harutjunjan says she has been in touch with her attorney about possibly taking legal action against UPS, the driver and Amazon.
