Dog hilariously refuses to look at owner after he clips his nails too short

A couple found themselves firmly in the doghouse with their German short-haired pointer after a minor grooming mishap.

Destiny Rayne Bonner took to TikTok to share footage of beloved dog Gunner giving them the silent treatment after her husband accidentally cut one of his nails a little too short.

“He won’t even look at us,” Bonner wrote alongside footage of Gunner looking off into the distance, stubbornly refusing to acknowledge either of his human companions.

Gunner has been a part of Bonner’s life since January 2022 when the couple brought him home in Nashville, Tennessee, as an 8-week-old puppy. “My husband’s dream dog has always been a German short-haired pointer, so it was a dream come true the day we finally brought him home,” Bonner told Newsweek.

Gunner loves life. “He’s a very active pup,” Bonner said. “He loves being outside. He’s a beast at playing fetch and does duck hunting alongside my husband during hunting season as well.”

However, one thing Gunner doesn’t like very much is getting his nails cut.

“He doesn’t get his nails cut very often, but his nails were extremely long this most recent time and we knew we needed to clip them,” Bonner said. “Gunner doesn’t like it, but he is such a good boy and tolerates it. He doesn’t give us a hard time at all. He usually just looks away or tries to lick his nails a lot when we’re trying to cut them because he’s nervous, but he is super easy to work with.”

Cutting his nails might be an arduous task, but most times trimming them is relatively straightforward. This was not one of those times, though.

“My husband was doing an amazing job clipping,” Bonner said. “I was holding the flashlight of my phone over the nails for him to see, and then on the last nail he accidentally clipped a little short and we felt horrible.”

Though the dog didn’t react with a yelp, they could tell he wasn’t happy. “Gunner barely even flinched,” Bonner said. “He just immediately reacted in a very sad manner and wouldn’t even look at us.”

His behavior soon descended into the kind of thing you would usually associate with an upset child. Bonner said “his head turned and would not look at us or anything when we tried comforting him. He just kept looking away like he was so sad and mad at us.”

For many Americans, a pet can serve as a child of sorts. A 2022 survey of 2,000 cat and dog owners in the U.S. conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Pet Honesty found that 25 percent of respondents referred to their pet as their “child.”

As in any good family, this particular dispute was over soon enough. “The silent treatment didn’t last very long, only a few minutes, and as soon as I brought out the treats he was OK and quickly forgave,” Bonner said. “Gunner is a very tough dog. He’s so strong, so once the treats were involved, he was good to go and on his way to playing again.”

They have even been able to laugh about it since, thanks partly to the fact that Bonner filmed Gunner’s reaction and posted the clip to her TikTok channel, xxodestina. So far, it’s been watched over 20 million times.

“I couldn’t believe his reaction since I had never seen him act this way. So my initial instinct was to capture it because of how cute he is and honestly how much of a humanlike reaction it was as well,” she said. “I am very surprised at the response to the video. I did not think it would go viral.”

Though everyone is happy again, Bonner might want to think about taking over the nail trimming duties for the time being.
