Dog given own seat, pillow and blanket on flight, he takes full advantage

When a flight attendant on an almost empty flight noticed a dachshund in the cabin, they offered him a business class upgrade—with all the trimmings.

The canine, whose cozy in-flight experience has since become a viral sensation on Instagram, was filmed fast asleep in his very own seat, complete with a pillow and blanket, as if he had paid a premium for the privilege.

The short clip, which was shared to the platform by his owner under @thewienieking on May 7, shows the business class section of an airplane before panning to a small black and tan dachshund stretched out luxuriously in his very own seat.

An overlaid text on the video provided more context: “When the flight is empty so the flight attendant asks if your dog wants his own seat, pillow and blanket.”

The dog, clearly undisturbed by the attention, was filmed stretched out with his head on the pillow, half-covered by the blanket, and sleeping soundly.

Although the pet’s owner had not stated which airline they were flying with, dogs up to a certain size can enjoy a comfortable journey in the cabin with their owners on several U.S. airlines.

While airline policies differ, a few of the most common airlines flying through U.S. airports like American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines, allow pets to fly in a carrier under the seat.

American Airlines lets dogs fly in an approved carrier on most flights, for flights up to 11 hours and 30 minutes in length. Delta asks that the traveling dog fit under their owner’s seat, and that for international flights their carrier has four sides of ventilation. United allows dogs over 4-months-old to fly internationally.

Most airlines ask for a traveling pet fee and some may need owners to comply with vaccine or health certificate requirements.

Comments

Since it was posted, the video has been viewed more than 6.6 million times and has garnered over 868,000 likes, with plenty of Instagram users commenting on the seemingly blissful experience of the furry flyer.

Several viewers have praised the flight attendant and the dog’s owner for providing the calm canine with such luxury treatment.

“He deserves the soft life,” one viewer said.

“My dog just asked me if we’re poor,” another added.

“I used to do this a lot on American Airlines—in business and first—with a long haired dachshund,” a third viewers shared. “The attendants always said that he was so much nicer than most of the passengers.”

“The flight attendant deserves a raise please,” another said.

“Excuse me while I show this to every airline—this is the standard now,” another added.
