DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Decatur Firefighters attempted to save a dog from a house fire in Decatur on Saturday, November 30, around 5:30 p.m., but unfortunately, despite their resuscitation efforts, the dog did not survive.
In a media release, DFD Chief of Operations Neil Elder said that when crews first arrived Saturday afternoon in the 3400 block of Plover Dr., they saw smoke and fire coming from the front room and the attic. After quickly forcing open the front door, they used an attack line to put the fire out in less than 20 minutes.
While the residents were not home at the time of the fire, there was a dog. Firefighters found the dog, removed it, and attempted life-saving measures, but unfortunately, it did not survive.
The people who live at the house are displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
The DFD is currently investigating the fire.
Elder adds to use caution when using a space heater: “Be sure to leave a clearing of 3 feet in all directions from the heater and supervise them while they are in use.”
Recently, the American Red Cross offered steps to take to heat homes safely, and urged people never leave a space heater unattended, do not plug it into an extension cord, and keep children, pets away.
“Heating equipment is a leading cause of home fires in this country,” said Rodrigo Carrillo, Regional Disaster Officer for the Illinois Red Cross. “But, there are steps people can take to avoid having this happen to them. Help keep your family safe by providing at least three feet of space around all heating equipment, testing your smoke alarms monthly and practicing your two-minute home fire escape plan.”
