A dog is dead following a freak accident in Tennessee.
On Monday, Jan. 6, the animal died after it was electrocuted while walking through a puddle outside a Walmart store in Knoxville, according to USA Today.
A woman who saw the ordeal, and later reported it to the Knoxville Police Department (KPD), said the dog “yelped and lost consciousness” after stepping in the puddle, the outlet reported.
USA Today said the woman and others attempted to revive the dog but were unsuccessful in doing so.
Police also told the publication they were unaware if the canine had an owner or was a stray.

In a statement to USA Today, Scott Erland, a representative for the KPD, said, “The woman who reported this incident said that the dog was electrocuted because she personally felt the shock.”
Erland added that the Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) “worked with Walmart maintenance to identify and repair the problem.”
In a statement to PEOPLE, the organization said, “The electrocution that occurred was a result of infrastructure failure on privately owned lighting powered by a privately owned breaker. KUB responded to the scene and confirmed that all KUB infrastructure was functioning properly.”
Walmart, meanwhile, said in a statement to USA Today that the company was “saddened by what’s happened at our Knoxville, Tennessee, facility, and our heart breaks for the family involved,” adding: “We’re working with authorities as they continue investigating.”
The KPD and Walmart did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
