A Rural Hall family is thankful this New Year’s Day for a barking dog and some quick action that kept a fire from destroying their home.The Perez family is calling their dog Yukina a hero and warning everyone about how to properly throw away used fireworks.Julissa Perez and her brother Michael rang in the New Year with fireworks. When they were done having fun, they threw them away next to an outdoor trash can.Around 3 a.m. their dog Yukina started barking at something outside. That’s when they noticed flames shooting along the side of the house all the way to the roof.Michael ran into the garage and grabbed four fire extinguishers. He was able to douse the fire enough to keep their home from being severely damaged. They have a warning for anyone using fireworks.“After using them don’t think they’re turned off. We trusted that the fireworks were off and this happened so really be careful with the fireworks,” Julissa Perez said. “We’re grateful that we saved the house and we’re starting the New Year rough but we’re here.”Fortunately, there were no injuries and the Perez family is still staying in their home.
