Dog adoption fees waived as Young-Williams’ Division St. location reopens

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Young-Williams Animal Center’s location at 3201 Division Street has reopened following a temporary closure due to multiple canine distemper cases.

On Monday, Young-Williams shared that dog adoptions were available again. In addition, adoption fees for dogs and puppies have been waived. Last week, both Young-Williams Animal Center locations were temporarily closed for dog adoptions because of at least nine positive canine distemper cases. The Kingston Pike location reopened on Friday, June 7. Both locations are open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily and closed 1-2 p.m. for animal quiet time.

With a full shelter, it is critical to keep placing currently healthy animals – including those who have not been exposed or have been vaccinated against distemper – into homes in order to continue to control the animal populations, decrease the spread of disease and make space for those in need.

Statement from Young-Williams

Currently, both shelters are emergency intake only, and Young-Williams is asking the community to refrain from bringing stray dogs to the shelter. Instead, if someone encounters a stray dog, the shelter says to note the nearest street sign or identifying business and contact Young-Williams Animal Services at 865-407-2229 with the location and a description of the animal, including color, size and whether it is wearing a collar. Officers will then attempt to return the dog to its home so it is less likely to enter the shelter.

“By limiting the intake of strays and temporarily halting dog adoption, we aim to contain the disease and protect the animals in our community and those in our care,” wrote Young-Williams.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of dogs. The virus is preventable through vaccination.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
