Dock diving returns to Hub City; Kennel club hosting dog competitions over weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – South Plains pups are in for a fun few days, thanks to the Heart of the Plains Kennel Club. It’s hosting the North America Diving Dogs (NADD) organization for a series of competitions this weekend.

Whether its grabbing a suspended toy, catching one mid-air or racing across the pool, Hub City dogs have several opportunities for a splash this weekend. NADD’s South Central Mobile Dock travels around this region of the country, putting on events for dog lovers and their furry friends.

Volunteer Kaylea Ortiz says there will even be some pro pups in town for the weekend. One dog expected to compete, Wik from Tulsa, can jump over 33 feet.

“We have people coming from Oklahoma. We have people Colorado, New Mexico, people travel and just do this almost for like that’s their life,” Ortiz said.

There are three categories of competitions in the pool. In distance jumping, dogs run down the dock and jump as far as they can in the water. For a retrieve, the dog runs down the dock and jumps up into the air and catches a buoy, landing in the water. The hydro dash is a swimming relay where dogs jump into the pool, swim to the end of the dock, retrieve the buoy, and return it to their owner.

Ortiz says any dog can join in on the fun, even if they never have before. She rescued her pup, Zera, off the streets of Lubbock.

“She’s a rockstar at this. She loves it. And we’ve only been doing it about a year and she’s just spectacular. So, any dog can do it,” she said.

The Heart of the Plains Kennel Club is hosting the Sniff and Splash trial Friday-Sunday in the back parking lot of the old KCBD building at 56th St. and Avenue A, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

There will also be scent work trials going on inside.

For $10, dogs can get six minutes on the dock to try it out. Owners can also pay $30 for their dogs to compete for a title. The top dogs will get an invite to regionals.

If dog owners can’t make it this weekend, Ortiz says the Heart of the Plains Kennel Club hosts fun events like these all year.

“Anybody is welcome to come and be a part of it and help plan things, and just bring the dogs and just have a good time with other like minded people,” Ortiz said.

Sign-ups for dock diving begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Follow the Heart of the Plains Kennel Club Facebook page for more information.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
