MISSOULA, Mont. – This weekend, the Missoula County Fairgrounds is hosting a unique event that combines fetch, athleticism and plenty of water. Dock diving dogs are making waves as they compete in this exciting sport.
Dock diving involves dogs sprinting down a 40-foot platform and launching themselves into the water after their favorite toy. Judges measure the distance of their jump, with some dogs showing impressive skills.
Jody Hudson, a judge with North America Diving Dogs, explained the judging process. “So as the dogs jump, what I’m looking for is from the base of the tail or the tail set. So where the tail and the bottom of the dog meet, where that crosses the plane and hits the water,” said Hudson.
The event is hosted by North America Diving Dogs, a national organization that travels to events like this one. Dogs of all breeds and sizes can compete in different divisions to keep the competition fair. Top jumpers will qualify for a regional championship in Oregon this August.
Hudson encouraged people to participate or spectate. “If you’ve never done it, at least come watch. And if you’ve got a dog, bring them. They can do, they can do. Try. It’s you get 6 minutes up on the dog. We’ll coach you on how to get your dog to go down the ramp and then come up the ramp and jump off the dog,” added Hudson.
The dock diving competition is part of the Five Valley Dog Shows, which include races, conformation and agility events. Spectators are welcome to attend, and the event is free to watch.
Hudson noted that even beginner dogs who jump just a few feet can have a great time. For dog owners whose pets love to swim and fetch, this event could be the perfect weekend adventure.
