DES MOINES — Fresh off its first loss in nearly a month, the Drake women’s basketball team did a number on Indiana State.
The Bulldogs scored a season-high in rattling off a 107-86 victory over the Sycamores in Thursday’s Missouri Valley Conference contest inside the Knapp Center.
Drake senior guard Katie Dinnebier, the Valley’s leading scorer, piled up 35 points, 10 assists and six rebounds to push the Bulldogs (19-9, 13-4) back into the win column five days after having their seven-game win streak snapped by MVC frontrunner Missouri State (22-6, 14-3).
The Bulldogs have three road games remaining in their pursuit of a second-straight Valley regular-season crown, starting with Saturday’s 2 p.m. tilt at Northern Iowa.
Indiana State (4-24, 2-15) came out running and gunning with the MVC’s second-highest scoring team, leading 35-33 after an opening quarter in which the two teams shot a combined 21-for-35 (60 percent) from the field and 11-for-16 (69 percent) from 3-point range.
Unfortunately for the Sycamores, the offensive pace was more than they could sustain, and their league-worst defense caught up to them.
Drake scored 26 points in the second and 29 more in the third, continually pulling away for the high-scoring triumph.
The Bulldogs’ previous season-high scoring mark was 95 points from their second game of the regular season, not including exhibition wins over Omaha (96 points) and Grand View (110).
Dinnebier was 12-of-19 from the field, going 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 7-of-8 at the free-throw line to lead Drake. Courtney Becker was 9-of-11 from the field on her way to 20 points, Abbie Aalsma added 16 points and six assists, and Anna Miller chipped in 14 points and eight boards.
The Bulldogs shot 59.2 percent as a team from the field (42-for-71), 44.4 percent from 3-point range (8-for-18), and 88.2 percent at the free-throw line (15-of-17).
Indiana State led by as many as 11 — 22-11 — during the high-scoring first quarter, but the Sycamores found themselves down by 10 at halftime.
Keslyn Secrist and Savannah White scored 24 points each to lead Indiana State, while Bella Finnegan finished with 22.
Indiana State shot just 35 percent from the floor after a blistering opening quarter in which it was 13-for-19 (68.4 percent) from the field.
