Getting a new dog can be an exciting adventure, but where you live can either be an advantage or a disadvantage when it comes to raising a puppy. 

Thankfully, if you are thinking of adding a furry friend to your household, Delaware is a great place to be — especially with the First State ranking as one of the most dog-friendly states in the United States. 

Delaware ranks as one of the most dog-friendly in the U.S. 

Showsight Magazine ranked Delaware as the third most dog-friendly state in nation.

Canine experts at Showsight Magazine used a variety of sources like Canine Journal, BringFido, Tripadvisor, World Population Review and Wikipedia to analyze the number of parks and green spaces, dog-friendly laws and legislation, pet services, vets, pet stores and dog-friendly hotels and restaurants to find out how dog-friendly each state is.

Delaware scored 8.83 out of 10 and charted as the nation’s third most dog-friendly state. The First State has the second-highest number of dog services and the fifth-highest number dog-friendly facilities and activities. The First State also has along laws against stealing dogs, which fewer than a third of U.S. states have in place.  

The most dog-friendly state is Rhode Island with a total score of 9.29, followed by Connecticut with a total score of 8.93.  

Showsight Magazine ranked Delaware as the third most dog-friendly state in nation.

 The rest of the Top 10 most dog-friendly states are: 

  • New Hampshire at No. 4  
  • North Carolina at No. 5 
  • Virginia at No. 6  
  • New York at No. 7  
  • New Jersey at No. 8 
  • Massachusetts at No. 9  
  • Maryland at No. 10

The least dog-friendly state is Alaska, with a score of 0 out 10, due to its size and how difficult it is to find dog services, activities and facilities. Alaska also has no laws against dog theft, according to Showsight Magazine.  

North Dakota ranks No. 2 for least dog-friendly state with a score of 0.25, followed by Montana at No. 3 with a score of 0.36.
