
The Mary Persons Bulldogs dropped three games to Florida schools over the weekend at the Border Battle in Tifton to fall to 2-6 on the year. MP will try to get back on track when it begins region play at Whitewater on Thursday, March 6 before hosting them on Friday, March 7. Then the Dogs will play at West Laurens on Monday, March 10 before hosting FPD on Tuesday, March 11.
This weekend was disappointing to say the least,” said MP head baseball coach Blake Cannady. “I thought we had a great week of practice leading into the weekend, but our opponents outperformed us in every phase of the game. It’s time to regroup and refocus as a new season begins with region starting on Thursday at Whitewater.”
MP lost to 3 Florida schools in the Border Battle in Tifton on Friday and Saturday. The Dogs were most competitive against Baker County on Saturday, locked in a 5-5 tie until Baker singled for a walk-off 6-5 win in the bottom of the ninth.
MP took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to two singles, including an RBI from Cole Carr.
Lefty sophomore Andrew Snow started and kept MP the leading, giving up just four hits and a run over five and two-thirds innings, striking out nine and walking one.
But in the bottom of the 7th, Baker County tied the game at 2-2.
The Dogs re-took the lead in the top of the ninth when Baker County walked Gavin Mitchell, Tristan Hunt and Carr, scoring them all.
Despite a 5-2 lead, MP fell apart in the bottom of the ninth. Baker County scored on an error, another batter was struck by a pitch, and MP gave up a walk and a single to center field, each scoring a run.
Mary Persons lost despite out-hitting Baker County 9 to 7. Harrison Bell, Cole Carr, Nick Howard, Gavin Mitchell, Nic Arnold, Tristan Hunt, Wiley Smith, Andrew Snow, and Rylan Holloway each had a hit for the Bulldogs.
Hunt took the loss for Mary Persons, going two and one-third innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits, striking out none and walking four.
Carr led the batters going 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and two walks.
The other games were not as close. In the other game on Saturday, MP fell to Clay 5-1.
Once again, MP took an early lead off a Clay error.
But Clay homered to center field to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. MP would never lead again.
Clay homered again, to left field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Clay’s winning pitcher surrendered just one hit and one unearned run over five innings, striking out six and walking one. Cole Carr took the loss for MP, going four and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking one.
Bradley Hendricks and Tristan Hunt each had a hit for MP.
The day before, on Friday, MP lost to West Nassau 6-2.
Again, MP scored first when Wiley Smith doubled.
West Nassau tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on a sac bunt.
MP re-took the lead in the bottom of the second when Tristan Hunt singled, scoring one run, to make it 2-1.
An MP error allowed West Nassau to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth.
West Nassau took the lead for good 6-2 in the top of the sixth on a single, double, sacrifice fly, and MP error, each scoring a run.
Shivan Patel took the loss for MP in relief, going two innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits, striking out two and walking one. Ayden Horne began the game for Mary Persons, surrendering two hits and two unearned runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking two.
Nic Arnold, Hunt, and Smith each collected a hit for the Dogs, and Hunt and Smith each drove in a run.
